
Finding Strength Through Handstands & Diabetes Management
At 22, a new world of balancing on hands opened up for me, propelling a journey of self-discovery intertwined with the challenges of living with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). My transformation began when I accepted an invitation to a handstand class at CU Boulder Recreation Center, setting me on a path of balancing both the physical and emotional aspects of my condition.
The Journey to Wellness: A Personal Struggle
Stepping into that first handstand class felt like stepping outside my comfort zone. My body, used to battling the invisible weight of diabetes, had become an estranged sensation during that class. As I attempted to kick my feet up and trust my hands beneath me, fear crept in, yet there was a resounding voice in my mind that whispered: “You can do this.” This process of learning handstands mirrored my experience of dealing with T1D.
Growing up with Diabetes took me through intense lows emotionally and physically. I vividly recall my first taste of independence in college. A simple breakfast of granola spiraled into distress when I mismanaged my insulin, shooting my blood sugar levels above 500 mg/dl. That experience forced me into isolation, encasing me into a cocoon of fear, unworthiness, and self-doubt. I was trapped inside a cycle of feeling like I had no control over my life or health.
